This was the first time we travelled for the Christmas holidays and it did not disappoint. I was admittedly a bit tentative about it. I love Christmas, the trees, the decorations, the cookies, the lights, Santa…what’s not to love? I didn’t want to miss the Christmas spirit and thankfully there was an adequate amount around Belgium to satisfy my holiday cheer needs!
Ultimately we decided to spend the Christmas holidays in Belgium because the Christmas markets in Brussels were open on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day (many of the markets across Europe are actually closed on these days). Since I have never experienced a Christmas market, I didn’t quite know what to expect. What’s a Christmas market? It’s pretty much what it sounds like. A couple hundred stalls, scattered across a few blocks selling Christmas ornaments, jewelry, beer, you name it. All of this outdoor shopping with drinks and food means you can wander around for hours. A true Christmas treat! We enjoyed exploring, eating oysters, sipping bubbly and picking out an ornament to commemorate the trip.
